Summer break is officially underway at the University of Alabama, and crews there will take advantage of the mostly empty campus to work on half a dozen road projects.

The majority of the Capstone's 40,000 students are gone from Tuscaloosa until August, and UA said the will close some roads and shift lanes on others to improve infrastructure during this low tide.

An interactive campus map shows the projects from an aerial perspective, and the work will notably include a two-month closure of a stretch of University Boulevard.

In the release, UA outlined six noteworthy closures to come and one that has already ended.

  • Sixth Avenue south of University Boulevard near Farrah Hall was closed until May 6.
  • The intersection of University Boulevard at Sixth Avenue will be closed May 7 through May 26.
  • University Boulevard in front of McClure Library will have a westbound lane shift from Colonial Drive and Stadium Drive from May 17 through July 26.
  • There will be lane shifts and closures of Hackberry Lane from 12th Street north to University Boulevard intermittently from May 6 through Aug. 4.
  • Colonial Drive near Reese Phifer and Drummond Lyon halls will be closed from May 6 through July 26.
  • University Boulevard in front of Reese Phifer and Doster halls will be closed from May 27 through July 26.
  • In addition to roadway changes, Galallee Lawn will be closed from May 29 through July 26.

All the work should be completed before the fall semester begins in late August and with the promise of another season of Alabama Football not far behind.
