Medium to High Winter Storm Threat Expected This Weekend in West Alabama
There are growing concerns about a winter storm threat that could impact the southern region, including Alabama.
The Weather Channel has named this system “Winter Storm Fern” and said that it “could spread damaging ice and heavy snow for millions from Texas and Oklahoma to the Carolinas and mid-Atlantic states.”
Be sure to check back frequently for updates, as winter weather forecasts can shift as we get closer to the event. Even a slight change in the forecast could make a big difference in what your West Alabama county experiences.
Possible Winter Threats
- Currently, the National Weather Service in Birmingham said “there is a medium to high (60-90%) chance for winter storm impacts near and north of Interstate 20. All locations should monitor for shifts in probabilities.”
- In Central and West Alabama, the threats include a wintry mix with freezing rain and ice.
- The greatest likelihood for accumulating snow with this system will be in the Tennessee Valley, particularly areas north of the Tennessee River.
Weather Models
James Spann, Alabama Weather Network and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist, said, “Global models continue to suggest potential for some very significant ice accumulation.”
Potential Impacts
“A worst-case scenario involves significant impacts to travel and infrastructure from icing, with compounding impacts due to frigid temperatures for those that experience power loss,” said the National Weather Service in Birmingham.
Timeline
“The risk of snow/ice will begin as early as midnight Friday night over Northwest Alabama; the precipitation will spread to the east and south Saturday and Saturday night,” said Spann. “It could very well linger well into the day Sunday before ending Sunday night.”
