If it feels like the outlook for this weekend has changed several times, you’re not imagining it.  As storm systems develop, new weather data can lead to forecast adjustments, and when winter weather is involved, those changes can happen more frequently and can be frustrating.

But, no worries, we will provide the latest information to help you stay weather-aware.

What We’re Watching Now

The Townsquare Media Weather Center is currently monitoring five core areas. Winter Weather Advisory Area, Influx of Rain, Severe Weather Threat, Temperature Change, and Road Conditions.

Let’s dive into the latest weather information!

Winter Conditions + Influx of Rain This Weekend

Fayette, Lamar, and Walker counties are under a “Winter Weather Advisory.” James Spann, Alabama Weather Network and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist, said that those in the “winter weather advisory area should be relatively low, but there could be a period of icy travel (mainly ice on bridges) until temperatures warm above freezing.”

“For the southern 2/3 of Alabama (I-20 south), it will be just good old-fashioned rain tomorrow,” said Spann.

Severe Weather Risk for Sunday

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a “Marginal Risk” for severe weather for some West Alabama counties on Sunday afternoon and evening. This included the southern portions of Greene, Hale, Perry, and Sumter counties.

The marginal risk threats include tornadoes and Damaging Winds with Gusts up to 60 mph.

Drastic Temperature Difference on the Way

Temperatures are expected to fall sharply Sunday afternoon and evening once the cold front passes through Alabama. Residents should know that there may be a brief window when freezing rain or even a few snowflakes form on the back side of the system.

Road Conditions

The National Weather Service in Birmingham said that “where moisture lingers on walkways and roadways, a risk for icing will exist anywhere across Central Alabama starting Sunday night.”

It would be best to plan for hazardous travel conditions in some areas because there could be a scenario in which a flash freeze occurs.

Good to Know

Whether it's severe weather or winter conditions, it’s important to know your county, where you are within it, and the counties around you. That awareness helps you understand what actions may be needed in your immediate area and gives you an early heads-up on what could be moving in from nearby locations.

The Townsquare Media Weather Center focuses on West Alabama communities in the following Townsquare Media coverage area of Bibb, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Perry, Pickens, Sumter, Tuscaloosa, and Walker counties.

The Townsquare Media radio stations that cover these ten counties include Praise 93.3, 92.9 WTUG, 95.3 The Bear, Catfish 100.1, Tide 100.9, 101.7 The River, and 105.1 The Block.
